Students and staff at the University of Kent will be able to choose a simple new way to enjoy their hot drinks while helping reduce the number of disposable cups used on campus from November 9.
The University is introducing a returnable cup scheme across participating catering outlets, giving customers a convenient alternative to single-use cups. The initiative forms part of Kent’s wider commitment to creating a more sustainable campus and reducing unnecessary waste.
Every year, thousands of takeaway coffee cups are used across campus. While reusable cups remain the best option for many people, remembering to carry one every day is not always easy. The new returnable cup scheme offers a practical solution, making it easier than ever to choose a reusable option when buying a hot drink.
For a limited time, you can join the returnable cup scheme for a special launch price of £3.50. This price will be available from the scheme’s launch on 9 November until 30 November. From 1 December, the standard joining price will be £4.15.
Once you’ve joined, you’ll receive a returnable cup and can choose to keep it, exchange it for a freshly cleaned cup when buying your next drink, or return it and receive a token to use next time.
The scheme removes the need to carry an empty cup around campus or remember to take it home for washing. Every returned cup will be professionally cleaned and prepared for reuse before returning to circulation.
A small change with a big impact
This initiative supports the University of Kent’s Sustainability Strategy 2025–30, which sets out our net zero commitments and/or approach to a circular economy, reducing waste and reusing resources. Kent already rewards customers who use reusable cups, and the new scheme provides an additional option for those who want the environmental benefits of reusables without the hassle of remembering one every day.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to join the scheme to buy a takeaway drink?
No. Disposable cups will still be available for visitors and anyone who is not part of the scheme.
What happens if I lose my cup?
You would need to purchase another cup to rejoin the scheme. If you’re worried about carrying a cup around, you can instead return it for a token that can be kept on your keyring.
Can I take the cup home?
Yes. The cup is yours to keep and use for as long as you wish. Just remember, no mouldy cups will be received back.
Why is there a joining fee?
The fee covers the cup and access to the returnable cup system. For regular hot drink customers, the reusable cup discount means the cost can be recovered over time while helping reduce waste.
Will the cups be hygienically cleaned?
Yes. All returned cups are professionally washed before being put back into use.
