How would you describe your current role in one sentence?
I provide technical architecture and design direction across digital, data, and technology projects within the Home Office (Home Office Biometrics), translating complex requirements into scalable, secure technical
solutions.
How did you find your career opportunities, and what application or interview tips would you like to share?
I found my roles through a mix of targeted applications and being approached directly — my PhD research profile and publications in biometrics and cyber security helped me stand out, particularly for research-focused
positions at the Alan Turing Institute. For the Technical Architect role at the Home Office, the application process was via the Civil Service, which places heavy emphasis on competency-based examples mapped to specific behaviours. My key tip: don’t assume your PhD is irrelevant to non-academic applications — frame your research experience in terms of stakeholder engagement, project delivery, analytical thinking, and written communication. Prepare concrete, specific examples for every competency, and practise delivering them concisely. For technical/architect roles, be ready to discuss how you’d approach system design, trade-offs, and security considerations at a high level.
What have been the key highlights or impacts of your career so far?
- Published research in IEEE Transactions on Biometrics, Behavior, and Identity Science and at international conferences (ICPR, ACM SAC, IEEE ICCST), with 45+ citations to date.
- Contributed to the Trustworthy Digital Infrastructure for Identity Systems project at The Alan Turing Institute, working on sociotechnical approaches to secure and privacy-preserving digital identity.
- Served on BSI IST/44 and ISO SC 37 WG5 biometric standards committees, contributing to the development of international biometric standards.
- Treasurer and committee member, BCS Kent Branch; Learner Supervisor for the Chartered Institute of Information Security (CIISec) CyberEPQ programme.
- Volunteered at NCSC CyberFirst outreach events to encourage young people, particularly girls, into cybersecurity.
What advice and reflections would you like to share with current students, particularly those considering a transition from a PhD into a non-academic role?
- Start thinking about your career direction before you submit your thesis — don’t wait until the viva is over to begin exploring options. Attend career events, talk to alumni, and build your network early.
- Recognise that your PhD gives you far more transferable skills than you might think: project management, self-direction, stakeholder communication, critical analysis, technical writing, and the ability to quickly understand complex domains are all highly valued in industry and government.
- Don’t feel that moving away from academia means abandoning your research identity — my PhD in biometrics directly informed my work at the Alan Turing Institute and continues to be relevant in my current role. Your specialist expertise can be a genuine differentiator.
- Be open to roles that aren’t an obvious match on paper. My path went from mobile biometrics research into digital identity, then defence and security applied research, and now technical architecture in government. Each step drew on different aspects of what I’d learned before.
- Tailor your CV for non-academic roles: keep it concise (two pages), lead with impact and outcomes rather than methodology, and translate academic language into plain, results-focused terms.
Consider professional memberships and chartership — I’m a member of BCS (MBCS), hold RITTech registration, and am an Associate of CIISec (ACIIS). These signal credibility and commitment outside academia.
Which skills developed during your PhD do you use in your current role?
- Analytical and critical thinking — evaluating evidence, identifying trade-offs, and making evidence-based decisions.
- Technical writing and communication — translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, from stakeholders to non-technical colleagues.
- Research and evaluation methodology — structured approaches to assessing systems, frameworks, and technologies.
- Systems thinking — understanding how individual components interact within a larger architecture, which is central to technical architecture work.
- Security and privacy awareness — an in-depth understanding of biometric systems, authentication, and cyber security principles that informs how I approach solution design.
- Project and time management — managing a multi-year independent research project taught me how to plan, prioritise, and deliver to deadlines.
- Stakeholder engagement — collaborating with supervisors, external partners, and standards bodies during my PhD built skills I now use daily.
