Research in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) has been ranked third in the UK by the Times Higher Education

The School’s ranking is based on results announced today by the Research Excellence Framework (REF).  The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK higher education providers (HEPs). SSPSSR came third out of 76 in the Social Work and Social Policy Unit of Assessment.

100% of SSPSSR’s environment was evaluated as world-leading, reflecting their inclusive and vibrant research culture. The School also received a high score for their outputs, with 50% assessed as world-leading. The results recognise their innovative and interdisciplinary approach and their intellectually ambitious research.

SSPSSR research makes a real difference to society: 83% of impact was classed as world-leading in a range of areas such as drug decriminalisation, flexible working and improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Professor Iain Wilkinson, Head of School, said “We are delighted to have received this recognition for the research achievements in SSPSSR. Over the last twenty years our School has consistently been ranked at the highest level for its research contribution to Social Work and Social Policy, and it is wonderful to have this position confirmed once again in the REF 2021 results. This bears testimony to the excellence and dedication of large numbers of SSPSSR colleagues, both past and present. Achievements of this kind come as a result of a huge collective and collaborative effort from academic, research and professional services staff, and I congratulate and thank all who have contributed to this success.”

SSPSSR research looks into some of the most challenging issues of the day, from tackling crime and drug addiction to bringing about a fairer society. Their vision is to explore how society works in order to make it better. Find out more on our School webpages.
