Paris Summer School in urban ethnography announced

The 2019 Summer School in Urban Ethnography will be taking place in Paris Sunday 7 – Sunday 14 July.

Explore the rhythm and diversity of city life in a vibrant urban context whilst developing your ethnographic research skills.

Now in its second year, the Summer School provides experience of conducting urban ethnography alongside learning about the principles and methods of ethnography. Students will study people, place, practices and things in the diverse urban setting of Paris able to immerse themselves in ‘natural’ social environments and learn to tune into what is going on around them, making the strange familiar and the familiar strange.

The Summer School is highly interactive and combines lecture time and in class discussion, formal visits and walks, and informal exploration. Dawn Lyon, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, convenor of the Summer School and part of the teaching team, says “This is a great opportunity to get a first-hand experience of doing ethnography. Students will explore concepts and theories through observations of social, cultural, economic, affective and material life in a diverse and vibrant urban context”.

International study enables students to gain a deeper understanding of another culture, make potentially lifelong friends from a wide variety of backgrounds and benefit from globally renowned academic excellence.

Cost: £470 plus travel (includes accommodation, travel in Paris, welcome and farewell meals, mid-week reception).

Successful SSPSSR students taking the Summer School as a 15-credit module are eligible to receive a £150 subsidy and a £75 travel bursary.
