Professor Julia Twigg’s research explores the role of dress and identity in the context of aging. Julia’s research has involved studying women over 55 years old and the way they relate to fashion – and the fashion industry relates to them, as well as those with dementia.
Speaking to Elder, a care organisation, Julia discusses her work and her latest research looking at whether the relationship between aging and dress is similarly experienced by men. Julia comments:
“Clothes are part of how we ‘perform’ our identity, and we’re so used to it that we don’t even notice sometimes and include profound things like gender – clothes are incredibly gender-driven, even those that purport to be ‘unisex'”
