Kent alumna writes about change in children’s palliative care

Writing for Nursing Standard during Children’s Hospice Week (22-28 May), Dr Rachel Black (PhD Social Policy, 2011) explains how the ‘Together for Short Lives’ charity is working to raise awareness of the needs of seriously ill children and their families.

Rachel discusses the importance of a holistic approach to paediatric palliative care. Utilising all the technology and medicines available is not enough, this expertise needs to be blended with opportunities for the children and their families to live their lives – to develop peer networks, to have exciting and fulfilling experiences and to gain independence appropriate to their own aspirations.
