Peter Taylor-Gooby chaired the British Academy-Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences joint workshop on Sustainable Urban Development at the British Academy in Carlton House Terrace on 25 March. The discussion drew attention to the contrast between Chinese urban planning as city-led and concerned to advance the city in competition with other cities, and the UK system where local initiatives are set within a much stronger framework of central government control. The two Academies decided to develop and strengthen their commitment to collaborative research.
