Link between charity and baby boomers

Following the publication of ‘Age of Opportunity – putting the ageing society of tomorrow on the agenda of the voluntary sector today’ by the Commission on the Voluntary Sector and Aging, Dr Eddy Hogg of the Centre for Philanthropy says that his own research shows that the ‘baby boomer’ generation can bring great value to charities – as long as the voluntary sector understands how to engage with them.  He explains, “The baby boomers who are retiring now are not only the largest group of retirees we have ever seen, they are also the healthiest. Volunteering is one of a wide range of activities that people might take part in at this stage of life, either as a new activity or a continuation of a lifetime of community engagement.” Working with Age UK, Dr Hogg has researched how volunteering undertaken by older adults relates to their volunteering and other work activities across their life course.
