New funding award for “Carers in the 21st Century”

SSPSSR’s Dr Alisoun Milne has – with five colleagues – recently been awarded funding for four seminars on ‘Carers in the the 21st Century: Developing the Evidence Base’. The money comes from the Economic and Social Research Council, the most highly-resp

ected funding body for social science in the UK. The objectives of the series are to:

  • Identify contemporary and future issues for carers in the UK
  • Review existing research evidence about the effectiveness of policy and health and social care interventions for carers and those they support
  • Establish a future agenda for research around services that meet the needs of carers and improve their quality of life
  • Explore key theoretical, conceptual and methodological challenges facing the carer research community
  • Encourage academic, third sector, practitioner and policy debate on effective carer research
  • Establish a carers research network

Presenters and participants are drawn from a range of backgrounds and disciplines including academic researchers, early career researchers, carers, service users, voluntary organisations, representatives from government departments, and postgraduate students.

The seminars will be held in four universities across the UK. Key themes and dates are: Carers and Policy in the 21st Century (8th October); Policy in Practice (11th Feb 13); Individual Carers, Personalised Needs (3rd June 13); & Effective Support For Carers(9th Sept 13). Participation is by invitation only. Please contact Alisoun at A.J.Milne@kent.ac.uk for more information about the project.
