The ‘English For Everybody’ programme is open for applications

A fantastic opportunity for students to teach English in a Italian school as a work placement for your year abroad.

The ‘English for Everybody’ programme was created ten years ago, as a collaboration between a group of state schools within the province of Bresica, Italy and York and Cardiff universities.

Successful applicants teach English for 240 hours in an Italian public school (in Brescia and the surrounding area) over the course of three months, starting either in September 2021 or March 2022. Students are hosted by a family (full board) and receive a scholarship salary of 800 euros net per month. Training is provided. The English language assistant duties include, helping teachers during their lessons, correcting pronunciations and workbook exercises. The Italian didactic reading and writing methods will be used in terms of teaching, reading and writing. The lessons will be mostly along the lines of CLIL lesson plans. and students will also be asked to create and prepare lesson plans for various subjects. The teachers collaborate, actively providing suggestions, materials and help with planning.

Those who apply to this position must have the following characteristics:

  • Be between 21 and 27 years old
  • A native English Speaker
  • Knowledge of Italian is essential
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with children and adults
  • Have a predisposition to work in a school
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers and prepare English lessons and other scholastics subjects
  • Be flexible and reliable
  • Able to problem solve
  • Be willing to live with a family, knowing that it is an important experience linguistically and culturally.

The programme offers:

  • A serious and rewarding cultural experience within the school
  • Training
  • The assistant creates contacts with educational professionals, but also with students who find the environment educationally dynamic and stimulating
  • Every assistant has a tutor within the school, who will help them with any difficulties
  • The assistant becomes close to one or two Italian families, who host them complimentarily. Therefore, the assistant with become part of the family and needs to act responsibly
  • A monthly stipend of €800 (paid in three monthly stipends)
  • The job consists of 240 hours working in the class (plus the hours of preparing the lesson plans)
  • The assistant will be provided with insurance for the activities that take place at the school. For those who are not part of the European Economic community, we advise that you purchase health insurance which will cover eventual/possible medical costs.

This cover letter (in English) should include:

  • why you think you are suitable for the position.

  • what you hope to gain from it.
  • details of relevant experience (if any).

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at a time of mutual convenience in January (date TBC after 10 January). The interview panel will include Gianfranco Serioli, the Italian responsible for the project.
