Now that I’m here: a conversation with Robert Rotifer

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics, along with the German Society and the Modern Languages Society recently hosted a live talk with Austrian musician, journalist and music curator, Robert Rotifer. The event took place on the Canterbury campus and was live streamed on the German Society’s Instagram page.

Born and raised in Vienna (Austria), but living in Canterbury, Robert has had a life-long affinity for British culture and music, from his early days in Austrian mod bands to his work as the UK-based foreign (music) correspondent for German and Austrian newspapers, magazines and radio stations, making solo records and collaborating with like-minded artists such as Wreckless Eric, Darren Hayman, Louis Philippe, John Howard and Helen McCookerybook. In particular, Robert’s German-language blog for the Austrian radio station FM4 is engaged with the peculiarities of British culture through continental eyes.

Students from the German Society chatted with Robert about his life and career, about the continental romanticisation of Britain through the narrative of British pop, but also about his observations and background as a diasporist European living in Brexitland. Watch the replay below!
