Lecturer in Latin American Studies, Dr Rebecca Ogden, launches her new podcast, Cuerpa Política with Dr Rachell Sánchez-Rivera from the University of Cambridge.
Cuerpa Política is a podcast about reproductive health, politics and justice in Latin America. Cuerpa Política is a series of conversations with artists, practitioners, activists and academics working across many disciplines. The podcast is funded by the Institute of Latin American Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London.
Rebecca shares, “Through these conversations, we explore the historical and contemporary dynamics that shape reproduction in Latin American – a region with some of the world’s most contentious reproductive health laws and persistent challenges in the quest for reproductive justice. We talk to experts about the political, economic and cultural factors that shape the lived realities of reproduction, and the power struggles involved in the control of reproduction.
While social distancing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic limits the potential of live events to reach a large audience, we hope that hosting fortnightly episodes of the Cuerpa Política podcast will extend the impact of scholarship and activism. It is especially exciting to host a series of conversations that brings academics researching in different disciplines together with artists, activists and practitioners working at the frontline of reproductive healthcare and reproductive justice struggles in Latin America.”
The first conversation is with Professor Laura Briggs, author of the landmark book, Reproducing Empire: Race, Sex, Science, and U.S. Imperialism in Puerto Rico, and an authoritative voice in many fields relating to reproductive politics across the Americas, such as eugenics, coercive reproductive measures, reproductive labour, transnational adoption, and neoliberalism’s pressures on care labour. The episode will launch on 17 March 2021. Following episodes include conversations with activists Alexandra-Marie Figueroa (Taller Salud, Puerto Rico) and Rebeca Ramos (GIRE Mexico), midwife Hannah S. Borboleta, drag performer Jaime Geligas, and researchers Dr Elise Andaya (SUNY), Professor Alexandra Stern (University of Michigan), Dr Cordelia Freeman (University of Exeter), Dr Céire Broderick (University College Cork), Dr Julieta Chaparo-Buitrago (University of Cambridge) and Dr Tatiana Sánchez-Parra (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana).
