Dr Joanne Pettitt contributes to new book, ‘Creating under Covid’

Lecturer in Comparative Literature, Dr Joanne Pettitt has recently contributed to a new book written by The Arnold and Leona Finkler Institude of Holocaust Studies, titled, ‘Creating under Covid‘.

The team behind the project write, “Fear, Isolation, Rejection. Togetherness, Construction, Reinvention. During the first months of 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic, also known as the “Coronavirus” or in some countries, just plain “Corona”, brought all these emotions, and more, to the fore. Suddenly, millions of people throughout the world found themselves sheltering at home, in quarantine, under lockdown, in isolation. Scrutinizing the up-to-date definitions of “necessary workers”, we all began learning the new rules of social and commercial engagement in order to understand how to behave.”

Creating under Covid looks into our transition to Zoom calls, online shopping, homeschooling as well as our behaviour changes and new ways of communication around the world. The book takes a look at how we did this, what it has done to our societies and the shared experiences we have endured, including Holocaust-related experiences and reflections of thoughts and concerns accompanying the pandemic.

Dr Joanne Pettitt’s contribution looked into the most recent years of Britain’s tumultuous journey from Brexit to Covid-19. You can read Dr Pettitt’s contribution on page 110.
