Performative verbs, language in lockdown and political activism; Nostalgia interview with John Partridge

Political activism demonstration

In the latest episode of the Nostalgia podcast series, Dr Chris Deacy, Head of the Department of Religious Studies, interviews John Partridge, Honorary Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Kent. John came to Canterbury from Bavaria in 1977 where he taught English.

Chris caught up with John earlier this month to talk about social media conventions, growing up in Sutton Coldfield, how places mean different things to different people, seeing The Kinks, The Who and PP Arnold at Liverpool Union, playing snooker on a tiny table, his views on political activism, his dilemma around diaries and why he still considers himself to be 16. John also talks about his PhD on performative verbs and the pair discuss whether new forms of language have arisen since lockdown.
