Cultures of Sustainability supports tree-planting on campus

Sustainability tree planting event

Dr William Rowlandson, Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Convenor of the Cultures of Sustainability module, joined student Racheal Brangan at a tree-planting initiative on the southern slopes of the University’s Canterbury campus.

William said: ‘The UK Committee for Climate Change has called for dramatic increases in woodland creation as part of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The Woodland Trust are calling on all areas of society to participate as part of their ‘Big Climate Fightback’ campaign and ECS Soc (Environmental Conservation Sustainability Society) thought what better place to plant trees than on our wonderful green campus.’

‘Universities should be at the forefront of dealing with the threats we face of climate change, ecosystem destruction and species loss. Engaging with students and the University’s Estates Department in tree-planting initiatives such as this is an example of the type of action that is needed. We planted 50 trees in around 40 minutes. We worked together to a shared goal, and got our hands dirty in rich, muddy soil crawling with healthy fat worms. Lovely!’
