Dr Edward Kanterian, Senior Lecturer in Department of Philosophy was interviewed for 42 Magazine, for a piece called ‘Nationalism and Philosophy’, published in Volume 2, dated March 2018, on Nationalism.

42 Magazine is an online European magazine that aims to convey the complexity of contemporary issues, simultaneously published in French, German and English.

The interview is conducted by Jonathan Egid, who completed his BA (Hons) in Philosophy with an Approved Year Abroad at Kent, and who is now a graduate student at the University of Oxford. The piece explores the rise of nationalist movements from a philosopher’s perspective, covering a range of thinkers including Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) and Ernest Gellner (1925-1969).

Edward questions the concept of nations in the piece: ‘definitions of nations in the relevant sense only really apply when there is something at stake, something to fight over, something that can be disputed, and this is paradigmatically territory.’
