Sophia Labadi’s museums and immigrants research in the press

Dr Sophia Labadi, Senior Lecturer in Heritage and Archaeology from the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, has made a number of recent media appearances following the publication of her book Museums, Immigrants, and Social Justice (Routledge, 2017).

In a piece contributed to The Conversation, entitled ‘What museums must do to get more immigrants through their doors, Sophia argues that museums play an important role in helping migrants settle into their home countries.   Her research found that museums have made some effort to address daily issues faced by immigrants by offering language learning classes and employment skills. However, these programmes have tended to exclude less-privileged immigrants. Sophia concludes that museums need to reach out beyond their walls to tackle the multiple forms of exclusion encountered.
