Dr Sophia Labadi, Senior Lecturer in Heritage and Archaeology in the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, has co-organised an event ‘Fanfare for a Seaside Town: Imagining Folkestone’s Future’ to be held on at 6pm Friday 13 October and repeated at 11am, 2pm and 6pm on Saturday 14 October 2017.
The event is a joint venture with composer/performer Anna Braithwaite and artist Andy Tuohy, in conjunction with artist/curator Diane Dever, which invites Folkestone residents to make their voices heard on the subject of the town’s future. The resulting exhibition will display artwork inspired by the themes that arose during a series of workshops and interviews with the local community, and will feature music and analysis in the form of an innovative ‘gig lecture’.
Describing the event, Sophia explained ‘This is an excellent opportunity to research the social impact of heritage and art based regeneration in the South of England and try to find new models that do not lead to gentrification’.
The event is part of the Folkestone Triennual, a festival of events celebrating the rich cultural history and built environment of Folkestone and its surrounding area. The event is free to attend, and will be held at the Customs House, Folkestone Harbour Arm.
