Dr Anna Katharina Schaffner, Reader in Comparative Literature and Medical Humanities in the Department of Comparative Literature, featured in The Irish Times this week discussing her book Exhaustion: A History (Columbia University Press, 2016).

The Irish Times is a broadsheet with a circulation of approximately 62,000 per day.

The article, entitled ‘Burnt Out? Relax, We’ve Been Exhausted for Centuries’ by Patrick Freyne, appeared in the edition dated Saturday 16 September 2017, as part of a series of features on the subject of burnout.

On the background of her book, Anna explains ‘I noticed there were loads and loads of media reports on burnout and how it has become a really dangerous epidemic threatening the workforce,’ she says in the article. ‘And in these articles people make the argument that we have never been as exhausted as we are nowadays.’ She challenges this widely-held view, arguing that anxieties about exhaustion can be found throughout history, all the way back to ancient Greece.
