Austrian culture event: ‘Lay Down Your Arms’

Dr Heide Kunzelmann, Lecturer in German in the Department of Modern Languages, has organised an event entitled ‘Lay Down Your Arms’ as part of her role as Director of the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature and Culture at the Institute of Modern Languages Research, that will take place in May.

The event consists of two parts, the first is a performance of Soul of Fire, a one-woman show that recreates the life and spirit of Bertha von Suttner, peace activist, writer and, in 1905, the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The play is written by Susanne F Wolf and will be performed by Austrian actress Maxi Blaha.

The second part is a short talk by Dr Daniel Laqua (Northumbria Univeristy), a specialist in 19th- and 20th-century history, on the history of European peace movements.

The event will be held on Monday 8 May 2017 at Senate House, University of London. Attendance is free, although as seats are limited, registration is recommended. For details, including how to book, please see: www.sas.ac.uk/events/event/7180
