KMTV reports on refugee language initiative

KMTV

KMTV, the online video channel produced by Kent Media group and the University of Kent, reported about the initiative between English Language & Linguistics students and the Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN) to teach English to refugees, broadcast online yesterday 18 January 2017.

The scheme was initiated by Dr Gloria Chamorro, Lecturer in Applied Linguistics, in collaboration with Jane Short, from the Centre for English and World Languages, and KRAN.

In the piece, KMTV reporter Louisa Britton interviews Gloria about the initiative. ‘We have a lot of teaching resources, we have computers that these students can use. We have a lot of students interested in volunteering and gaining teaching experience, so it seemed like a very good fit,’ explains Gloria.

Jessica Maddocks, from KRAN, praises the scheme in the video: ‘I think it has really helped to raise their educational aspirations and make them think about what is possible.’

The video is available to view here, with the report starting at 2 minutes into the bulletin: www.kentonline.co.uk/kmtv/kmtv-bulletin-wednesday-18th-january-2016-7353/
