Comparative Literature alumna on Radio 4

Kuba Shand-Baptiste

Kuba Shand-Baptiste, a graduate of the BA (Hons) in Comparative Literature, featured on BBC Radio 4’s Women Hour for a second time on Friday 6 January, talking about winter skin with Consultant Dermatologist Dr Susan Mayou.

The Women’s Hour programme discussed the effects of central heating, the cold weather and over indulgence on the skin, and what can be done to repair the damage. Kuba said ‘hydration is a massive issue in the black community, you tend to have to moisturise more often and use heavier creams for your body and lighter creams for your face. It is something you have to think about on a daily basis.’

Kuba featured on BBC Radio 4’s Women Hour in March last year talking about make up choices for women of colour, following the publication of an article she wrote in The Independent, arguing ‘The racists response to MAC’s Instagram shows we only celebrate black features when white women have them’.

Kuba graduated from Kent in 2014 and undertook an MA in Newspaper Journalism at City University London. She now works as Editorial Assistant at FT Adviser’s Money Management Magazine and has written recent articles on long-term care planning for the elderly and the potential impact of the LISA (Lifetime ISA). She sent her first pitch to a newspaper editor after completing the wild module Writing in the Media, from the Department of English Language & Linguistics, which led her to securing her first internship.

Kuba’s latest appearance on Radio 4 can be heard at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b086kxz8#play. The section on winter skin starts at 37.12 minutes into the programme.
