William Rowlandson on Trump’s relationship with Cuba

Dr William Rowlandson, Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies in the Department of Modern Languages, has contributed a piece to the website The Conversation, asking what next for Cuban-American diplomatic relations following the election of Donald Trump.

The piece, entitled ‘Cuba on Alert to See What Trump has Planned for America’s Closest Enemy’, observes that Trump has promised to reverse current President Barack Obama’s plans to close the controversial Gitmo detention centre at Guantanamo Bay.

Yet, as William observes, Trump has made inconsistent promises throughout his campaign, seemingly supporting Obama’s initiatives to restablishing US-Cuban international relations. ‘If Trump wanted to open up Cuba for US business, he would have to reverse his own plans to reverse Obama’s plans,’ argues William, ‘as we’ve seen – with Donald Trump, anything seems possible.’
