Dr Rosie Wyles, Lecturer in Classical History and Literature in the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, will be giving a public talk entitled ‘Visualising Ancient Greek Drama’ as part of the Autumn Art Lecture Series at the University of Bristol on Tuesday 8 November.

The vase painters of ancient Greece take you behind the scenes of theatre from over two thousand years ago. The vases that Rosie will discuss capture enticing traces of the performance tradition which gave birth to Western theatre. But far from offering a simple record, these paintings challenge their viewers to reflect on what theatre is. The talk explores the beginnings of the playful relationship between visual art and theatre.

The talk will start at 6.15pm in the Wills Memorial Building. For more details, including online booking, please see the University of Bristol webpage here: www.bristol.ac.uk/pace/public-events/autumn-art-lectures/
