Dr Mikkel Zangenberg, Lecturer in Danish Language and Culture in the Department of Comparative Literature, will be talking at a Nordic Network event titled ‘Equality, Inequality and Aesthetics’ at Torch (The Oxford Centre for Research in the Humanities), the University of Oxford, on Friday 14 October.

Mikkel’s talk will be titled ‘On the Politico-Aesthetic Education of a Nordic, Proto-European Welfare Man; or, How to Mobilize Schiller Anew, Through Reading Holberg’s Erasmus Montanus.’

Of the talk, Mikkel says: ‘My rather ponderous, longish title attempts to articulate the drift of a reading of the deeply ambiguous negotiation of universalism versus egalitarianism in Danish-Norwegian Ludvig Holberg’s 1723 play, as well as the possible, contemporary political and aesthetic relevance for the (virtually shipwrecked) European project, of what we might provisionally name a Nordic Welfare Modernism avant la letter.’

The event will be held at 2.30pm. For full details, please see the page:
