Ray Laurence to lecture in Massachusetts

Archaeological Institute of America

Professor Ray Laurence, Professor of Roman History and Archaeology in the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, will be giving a lecture at the Western Massachusetts Society – a branch of the Archaeological Institute of America, hosted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Monday 13 September 2016.

Ray’s talk is entitled ‘Migration and Mobility in the Roman Empire’. Migration is in the news on both sides of the Atlantic, in the USA and in Europe. Yet, migration was a feature of the past and was the human dynamic that developed the cities of the Roman Empire. Ray’s lecture will explore the implications of this phenomenon for our understanding of Roman history.

The lecture draws upon Ray’s research interests in Roman migration, upon which he collaborated with Dr Julie Anderson from the School of History and Dr Hella Eckardt from the University of Reading to produce a film on migration by Cognitive Media How Immigration shaped Britain.

Ray’s visit to the University of Massachusetts Amherst is a return visit, following a visit and lecture series by Professor Eric Poehler to Kent last year.
