Congratulations to Ada Nifosi

Ada Nifosi

The Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies is delighted to announce that Ada Nifosi has been awarded a PhD, under the supervision of Dr Csaba La’da and Dr Patty Baker, with a thesis entitled ‘Women’s Body, Society and Domestic Space in Graeco-Roman Egypt’.

Her thesis investigated the social and legal status of women in Graeco-Roman Egypt through the lens of women’s reproduction. It focused on some important and understudied aspects of women’s life such as their coming of age, social and religious taboos of menstruation, and birth rituals.

It investigated medical, legal and religious aspects of women’s reproduction both from historical sources like Greek and Demotic papyri and also from archaeological sources such as artefacts found in domestic contexts and archaeological reports. It also sought to identify which rooms of the house were mainly used by women and whether or not women and men shared the same rooms any time.

Our congratulations to Dr Nifosi.
