Lucy O’Meara publishes on Japanophilia

Cover of Réceptions de la culture japonaise en France depuis 1945

Dr Lucy O’Meara, Lecturer in French in the Department of Modern Languages, has just co-edited a new collection Réceptions de la culture japonaise en France depuis 1945: Paris-Tokyo-Paris: détours par le Japan (Honoré Champion, 2015) with Fabien Arribert-Narce (Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo) and Kohei Kuwada (University of Tokyo).

Since the (re)opening of Japan to the West in the mid-19th century, many French writers and artists have been fascinated by Japanese art and culture.  This work, which collects the papers from the 2013 Centre for Modern European Literature conference ‘Paris-Tokyo-Paris: Responses to Japan in French Art, Culture and Theory since 1945’, offers a broad perspective into the phenomenon of Japanophilia. The collection includes authors not only from France and Japan but also those from the UK and US, resulting in a diversity of perspectives and disciplines.

The divergent points-of-view offer the readers insights into the aesthetic and theoretical traditions of ‘New Japanism’ from the post-war period to the present day, including insights into the work of such writers and directors as Christine Buci-Glucksmann, Michel Butor, Chris Marker, as well as Michaël Ferrier, Philippe Forest, and Gérard Macé, who themselves have contributed to the collection.
