Dr Nuria Triana-Toribio, Professor of Hispanic Studies, in the Department of Modern Languages has published a new book entitled Spanish Film Cultures: The Making and Unmaking of Spanish Cinema (Palgrave/British Film Institute, 2016).

Since the 1980s, the Spanish film industry has emerged from obscurity and isolation to achieve broad international recognition within European and world cinema. This insightful new study examines this transition in Spanish film culture, focusing on the role played by the most influential association of film professionals working in Spain – the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas.

Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews to explore the institutional, cultural and political networks and conditions driving Spanish film-making, the text argues persuasively that Spanish cinema has been deliberately shaped by the Academia for the dual democratic purpose of providing culture and entertainment to Spanish audiences, and also serving as an example to the rest of the world of what a newly democratic nation can achieve.

This fascinating and timely work enriches the study of the Spanish film industry by demonstrating how film and film making are part of a broader cultural landscape. It is a landmark resource for students of Film, Media Studies, Spanish Culture and Politics.
