Professor Amalia Arvaniti from the Department of English Language and Linguistics is to talk at the University of Oxford today, at the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology & Phonetics.

In the talk, entitled ‘Revisiting some standard assumptions about the role and structure of intonation: a cross-linguistic perspective’, Amalia revisits certain assumptions about the role and structure of intonation that are often unquestioned and shows, on the basis of data from Romani, Greek and Polish, that they need to be re-examined: intonation is much more variable in its functions and realization than is often assumed; engaging with this variability is essential for developing better theories and a better understanding of intonation.
