Dr Antônio da Silva, Language Coordinator in Portuguese, from the Department of Modern Languages is to be guest speaker at a  conference entitled ‘Portuguese Film: Colony, Postcolony, Memory’ on Friday 15 January at the Institute of Modern Languages Research in London.

The event is organised with the support of the Philip Leverhulme Trust and the Camões Institute.

Antonio’s talk is entitled ‘Rebuilding Colonial Memory through Archive in the Work of Two Portuguese Women Film-makers: Margarida Cardoso and Filipa César.’ Margarida Cardoso is one of the most consistent names in Portuguese cinema; her films including Christmas 71, The Murmuring Coast and Yvonne Kane have in common an interest in colonial and post-colonial in a very unique perspective, exploring memory, loss and guilt. Filipa César is an artist and filmmaker whose films are concerned with the relationship between history, memory, image and narrative.
