Dr Ian Cooper, Lecturer in German, and Dr Deborah Holmes, Senior Lecturer in German, both from the Department of Modern Languages, have edited and contributed to a special issue of the UK’s major German Studies journal German Life and Letters on the nineteenth-century short prose narrative.
The volume is based on a symposium held in Canterbury in June 2014, supported by SECL and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The issue gives innovative perspectives on well-known authors of novellas and tales such as Ludwig Tieck, Adalbert Stifter and Theodor Storm, while including studies of lesser-known writers such as Ernst Rosmer (Else Bernstein) and Lou Andreas-Salomé, whose works shed new light on the period.
