James Fowler on eighteenth-century femininities

Dr James Fowler, Senior Lecturer in French in the Department of Modern Languages will be speaking at ‘Eighteenth-Century Femininities’, a one-day workshop to be held at Birkbeck College, University of London.

The workshop marks the launch of an interdisciplinary network eighteenth-century feminities, whose purpose is to stimulate collaboration among colleagues and PhD students from across the Consortium of the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE).

The workshop will last all day, from 10.30am until 5pm. Following an introduction given by James in collaboration with Dr Ann Lewis (Birkbeck), James will present on ‘Prudes as Objects of Desire in Laclos, Rousseau and Sade’, showing how the figure of the prude was presented by the eighteenth-century French novelists, who have distinct notions of ‘feminine’ virtue and chastity. He will also refer to eighteenth-century medico-philosophical theories of gender, the body and health.
