Sofie Vanhoutte, who is studying for her PhD in Classical & Archaeological Studies, has received a Special PhD Fellowship from the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen (FWO), the research foundation of Flanders.

Sofie’s research project at Kent is on ‘Transformations in Military “Identities” in the Roman North Sea Frontier Zone’, focusing on the Roman Saxon Shore fort complex at Oudenburg near Ostend, supervised by Dr Steve Willis. The FWO scholarship will enable Sofie to take a sabbatical from her work at the Flanders Heritage Agency as she writes up her final thesis.

Professor Philippe De Wilde, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and Enterprise at Kent, said of the award: ‘The FWO is very selective, so this is a great achievement.’

On receiving the award, Sofie said: ‘I’m thrilled: this year gives me the extra time needed to write up all my research. That the FWO values my project, is a great motivation.’
