Comparative Literature alumna launches micro press

Ark Books micro publishing project 'Becoming the Other in Translation / Alone'

Maya Zachariassen, an alumna from the Department of Comparative Literature, has recently launched a micro press as part of her English-language bookshop Ark Books in Copenhagen. The first title sees a literary coup by pairing work by major American authors Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedtm.

Maya is one of the four founders of Ark Books, and began funding work on this project in the final year of her BA (Hons) in Comparative Literature with a Year Abroad, before graduating in 2014.

Paul Auster is an American writer and director, whose novels include The Brooklyn Follies (Holt and Co., 2005) and The Book of Illusions (Holt and Co., 2002). Siri Hustvedt is an American novelist and essayist, whose works include What I Loved (Hodder and Stoughton, 2003) and The Summer Without Men (Sceptre, 2011).

Auster contributed one of his earliest works to the print, the short story ‘Alone’ (1969), while Hustvedt contributed an entirely new piece for this project, ‘Becoming the Other in Translation’ (2014).
