Nikolaus Klassen, a PhD student in the department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, has recently been awarded a prestigious PhD stipend from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes [German National Academic Foundation], Germany’s largest organisation sponsoring students of outstanding academic achievements.

Nikolaus is working on early Christian poetry under the supervision of Professor Karla Pollmann, with a research project entitled ‘Prudentius: A Lyrical Poet in the Age of Asceticism’. Nikolaus is one of the research students attached to the Centre for Early Christianity and its Reception.

On receiving the award, Nikolaus said, ‘I am delighted to receive this award because it allows me to focus entirely on writing my thesis. The foundation also offers a broad range of summer schools and language classes and has an inspiring PG community from which I will benefit greatly.’

This award expresses both their confidence in the quality of the applicant and his proposal and of PhD provision here at Kent.
