As part of the University of Kent’s ‘Visualisation of the Late Antique City’ project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, PhD student Joe Williams will be giving a lecture entitled ‘Roman Shops and Shopping’ at The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge on Thursday 22 January, 18.00-19.00. The lecture will explore retail in the Roman city, including lesser-known trades, such as chandlery, perfume making and fast-food.

Tickets are available and cost £6, or £4 for members of The Beaney.

Additionally Joe, together with fellow PhD student Faith Morgan and  Dr Luke Lavan from the Department of Classical & Archaeological Studies, will also be taking part in a ‘Hands-on Heritage’ event about Roman shopping at the Canterbury Roman Museum on Saturday 24 January, 13.00-14.00.

This fun re-enactment day will give families the opportunity to meet a Roman fruit seller, spice-merchant, basket-maker and a repairer of worn out clothes as they experience the hustle and bustle of the Roman marketplace.

Tickets are available and cost £8 for adults, £6 concessions with £1.50 for additional children, and are available here:
