Comparative Literature A level essay competition

The Department of Comparative Literature is running an essay competition for A level students to enter to win up to £100. The competition is titled with the theme ‘Transformations’.

Do you love to read? Are you thinking of studying for a literature degree? Are you curious to learn not just about English and American literature, but also about texts written by other European as well as Asian, African, Arabic, Russian and Latin American writers? Are you interested in cross-cultural comparison and in the many ways in which culture and history shape literary production? All interested A level students are invited to enter, submitting an essay of no more than 2,000 words under the title ‘Compare two or more texts depicting transformations’.  The prizes are:

  • First prize: £100
  • Second prize: £50
  • Third prize: £20

Essays may explore literary representations of character development or any other literal or metaphorical transformations pertaining to characters, objects or settings. The deadline for submissions is 5 January 2015, and the winners will be announced in February. Please send your submissions and a cover letter that includes your name and contact details to:
