Two PhD scholarships are now being offered, for 2015 entry, in the area of Digital Humanities, focusing on Digital Heritage as defined by UNESCO in 2003 and, subsequently, developed as the use of digital technologies to protect, document and understand humanity’s shared heritage.

The scholarships are being offered by the Eastern Academic Research Consortium (Eastern ARC), a collaboration between Kent and the universities of Essex and East Anglia. The Eastern ARC stimulates cross-institutional working and creates an environment in which collaborative research can flourish.

Digital Humanities at Kent is led by Professor Ray Laurence from the Department of Classical and Archaeological Studies, with Dr Benjamin Vis has been appointed as the Research Fellow for this area. Applications with the following research interests are particularly welcome: the digital analysis of the built environment; spatial humanities; comparative approaches to urbanism and urban life (including the study of the Pre-Columbian Americas, especially ancient Maya, and historic Europe); and geocomputational visualisations of urban archaeological data.

Candidates interested in applying for the Kent Eastern ARC Scholarships should make contact with potential supervisors at the University of Kent. Academic enquiries should be sent to Professor Ray Laurence via email R.Laurence@kent.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is Friday 30 January 2015. Applications will be subject to a shortlisting process and interviews are expected to take place in March 2015.
