Laurence Goldstein 1947-2014

Professor Laurence Goldstein

It is with great sadness that we announce that Professor Laurence Goldstein, former Head of SECL, and a very good friend to many of us, passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness.

Laurence joined Kent in 2005. He served for six years as Head of SECL, and was also Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities for a term. In that time, he demonstrated a tireless commitment to the School and the University, and grew to be much loved for his many kindnesses, his intelligence, and his wit. Before coming to Kent he spent many years at the University of Hong Kong, as well as spending time teaching at the Universities of Auckland, Cape Town, Glasgow, St. Andrews, Swansea, and Washington.  He published many books and articles, specializing in the philosophy of logic, the philosophy of language, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. His most recent work was an edited collection, Brevity (Oxford University Press, 2013).

Students will remember him for his enthusiastic teaching in the philosophy of language and paradoxes, which he delivered with his characteristic sense of humour. The world is a much poorer place for his passing. He will be very sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his wife, Carol, the rest of his family, and his many friends.

Carol Goldstein has set up a JustGiving fundraising page in his memory: www.justgiving.com/LaurenceGoldstein
