The online version of The Independent newspaper has published an article by Emily Adams, a second-year student in English Language & Linguistics.

Entitled ‘Who’s Scared of the Word “Cancer”, Katie Hopkins? I Am’, Emily’s article addresses the issues surrounding the discussion of cancer and why it is still considered by some to be a taboo and difficult subject to talk about. Emily draws on her own family experiences with cancer to refute comments made by controversial tabloid columnist and broadcaster Katie Hopkins, who questions why we are still frightened of the word cancer.

Emily submitted the article to The Independent as part of the assessment for the module LL530 Writing In The Media: A Practical Approach, in which students were required to write an article pitch and submit it to an existing magazine, newspaper or website.
