Two members of the Department of Religious Studies have published a debate the joys and problems of Christmas online in two parts.

In part 1 Dr Chris Deacy, Reader in Theology and Religious Studies, considers the problems of Christmas, including Santa Claus’ roots and if shopping is the real religion of Christmas. Part 2 sees Dr Alan Le Grys, Associate Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies, agree that Christmas has become a largely non-Christian festival, celebrated in shopping centres and the romantic nostalgia often associated with carol concerts.

The debate is published as part of the Kent Comment database in the University’s News Centre, a collection of expert commentary on topical issues.
