Cover of Symbolism: An International Annual of Critical Aesthetics

Symbolism: An International Annual of Critical Aesthetics has just published a special issue on Jewish magical realism, edited by Dr Axel Staehler, Reader in Comparative Literature. The issue contains 15 essays by a team of international scholars.

Magic realism has become a significant mode of expression in Jewish cultural production. The issue of Symbolism explores for the first time in a comparative and transnational approach the magic realist engagement of Jewish writers, artists, and filmmakers from the Diaspora and from Israel with issues of identity, oppression and persecution as well as the Holocaust.
