Deborah Holmes to talk at the National Gallery

Facing the Modern poster from the National Gallery

Dr Deborah Holmes, Head of the Department of German, will be presenting a talk at the National Gallery in London this Saturday, 30 November.

Her talk is entitled ‘When is a Salon Not a Salon?’ and will be part of an all-day study event to highlight the exhibition ‘Facing the Modern: The Portrait in Vienna’. With a focus upon the people of Vienna – their lives, loves and social habits, this study day will examine the social history of portraiture. Sessions include case studies on the literary salons of Alma Mahler and Eugenie Schwarzwald, Jewish culture and music as an agent moving between the arts.

Deborah’s presentation will consider the forms that salon life in Vienna took in the Modernist period, including the differences and rivalries between established hostesses such as Alma Mahler-Werfel and Berta Zuckerkandl as opposed to new arrivals like Eugenie Schwarzwald. As a case study of how the social interaction of the salons contributed to Modernist art, she will look at Oskar Kokoschka’s links to the circle around Schwarzwald.

The event will run from 10.30am to 5pm, and will cost £20/£16 concessions, or £10 for students.
