Heidi Colthup who is studying for PhD in Linguistics at Kent has just received a business boost with training from Kent County Council, with enough interest for her offer freelance opportunities to students from the Department of English Language & Linguistics.

Heidi described the background to the project: ‘My business partner, Katherine May, and I decided to set up Little&Loud after a conversation over lunch during the summer vacation; both of us work as freelance writers. We both have a great deal of knowledge and expertise in social media, magazine, and blog writing, we’re both used to being asked for advice on the subject, so we realised we could sell those skills.’

Her new business Little&Loud began in October and offers services from training on how to write effective, friendly, and entertaining blog, Twitter, and Facebook posts, to setting up websites and maintaining social media feeds.

‘We were lucky enough to gain the place on the Kent County Council funded School for Creative Startups, which is run by Doug Richard who was one of the presenters in the first two seasons of BBC2’s Dragons’ Den, and he’s now a government advisor for business.’

Their client base already includes a range, from companies to individuals, and Heidi has used her links with English Language & Linguistics to approach students to maintain social media.  ‘I know that any of the ELL students who have taken Writing in the Media or Language in the Media are already prepared and very good at this,’ explained Heidi.
