Dr Heide Kunzelmann from the Department of German will be delivering a public lecture at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London on 13 November, on the the Austrian avant-garde poet Hans Carl Artmann (1921-2000).
Entitled ‘Gothic Artmann’, the talk will analyse Artmann’s relationship to the English language and English literature. The poet was strongly influenced by the aesthetics of English Romanticism and Gothic literature of the 19th and 20th century and by English speaking popular culture. Using Artmann’s example, Heide will explore the way English culture and literature affected emerging post-War avant garde literature in Austria, and will look at curious and fascinating adaptations of British and American literary classics
Heide Kunzelmann is also director of the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre in London.
