Head of Linguistics to speak on intonation in Lisbon

Professor Amalia Arvaniti is giving an invited talk entitled ‘Analytical Decisions in Intonation Using Noisy Data’ at the workshop ‘Advancing Prosodic Transcription for Spoken Language Science and Technology II‘, sponsored by the Association of Laboratory Phonology (ALP) and held in conjunction with PaPI 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal, June 24, 2013.

The talk will use examples from the Professor Arvaniti’s research on Romani and English intonation to discuss the challenges one faces when analysing noisy data, including natural spoken data and data from non-standardised languages, and provide principled solutions to these challenges.

This workshop is a follow-up to one held in Stuttgart in 2012, and aims to address the challenges of prosodic transcription for research in spoken language sciences and for development of computer speech technologies.
