Weimar and the European Union

Following on from his workshop ‘Legality and Legitimacy: From Weimar 1932 to Bucharest 2012?’, DrĀ  Edward Kanterian, Lecturer in Philosophy, has just published on Verfassungsblog, the leading European blog on legal and political philosophy, legal and political developments, and especially constitutional matters, in the European Union.

The site is run by the Berlin Research Association ‘Recht im Kontext’, devoted to the repositioning of legal theory within the humanities. It publishes, on a regular basis, contributions by and interviews with prominent academics, policy makers and legal experts and has recently dedicated a whole series of articles to the crisis of democracy in the EU and especially Eastern Europe.

Dr Kanterian’s article summarises the recent workshop, organised with Eleanor Curran from Kent Law School on Kent’s Brussels campus, that explored parallels between the crisis of the Weimar Republic in 1932 and dangerous recent political and legal developments in Eastern Europe. To tackle such difficult questions, such cross-faculty and inter-campus events are extremely important, especially if they can receive the attention of a wider audience, such as via Verfassungsblog.
