Head of Hispanic Studies to lecture at Canning House

Dr Natalia Sobrevilla Perea, Head of Hispanic Studies, will be presenting at Canning House in London next week, on Thursday 9 May. Based in Belgrave Square, Canning House is a centre dedicated to stimulating understanding between Britain and the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian world through dynamic debates, networking events, and education activities.

Dr Sobrevilla Perea’s talk is entitled ‘Instability and Nation-building in the Nineteenth Century’. Countries breaking free from the Spanish and Portuguese Empires in led to the emergence of several new republics and a couple of Empires in the 1800s. But these were not exactly the countries in Latin America we now know: the process through which they came into being was complex and lasted for most of the century. Instability was one of the main issues nation builders had to contend with in creating new nations.

The talk will be held in the evening, 6.30-8.30pm, and costs ten pounds.
