SECL linguist to appear on BBC1’s The One Show

Alistair McGowan and David Hornsby

Dr David Hornsby, Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, will appear on the popular BBC programme The One Show this evening (19 April) at 7pm.

Dr Hornsby will be discussing the evolution of the Kentish accent alongside TV funnyman, Alistair McGowan as part of a regular feature called ‘Alistair’s Accents’.

This episode interviews residents from across Kent, including a waitress in a Faversham coffee shop and Cockney speakers in Hackney. It looks at how ‘own from London’ hop-pickers have introduced Thames Estuary accents to younger generations, compared to the countrified accents of their parents. Dr Hornsby provides commentary on the accents throughout the programme.

The episode will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer here:
